Spacious apartment in central Nice (France) close to shops, restaurants, 5 minutes walk from rail station, less than 10 from the beach.

Ideally situated 1st floor apartment, 1930s building, tall ceilings, hallway, 2 bedrooms + office, bathroom adjoining master bedroom, convertible sofa/double bed in bedroom 2 + another in the living room, separate shower room. Can sleep 6+ but we'd prefer not more than 4 guests, for their comfort & ours! Large living/dining room with parquet floor & oriental rugs, antique furniture -- take care!!! -- plenty of bookshelves + books in several languages, no aircon (we rely on through draft in hot summer weather); kitchen with gas rings + good electric oven. No microwave but can purchase if needed. Wifi + TV with access to many channels. Telephone with free calls to almost all developed countries.
One side gives onto a quiet street, the other onto a large (accessible) garden with a big oak tree, palms, cedar and exotic shrubs -- but note, no terrace.
Aiirport Tram station less than 250m. from home. Tram to Old Town and street markets 5 minutes on foot. All of central Nice within comfortable walking distance. Smart shopping streets round the corner. Good restaurants. In town, car not needed, more economical to hire one for excursions, but easy train/bus links to Antibes, Cannes or Menton and Italy (30 min. drive, 48 by train). High-speed TGV train c.3 hrs. to Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, 5:41 min. to Paris. Mountain country and high Alps within easy reach by car, train, bus. Nice has a major airport 15 min. by car or by bus from the station.
By the way, we do have an old Audi A3 parked in a nearby public car park, but if I've not mentioned it, that's because it has a manual gear shift...

Il nostro quartiere

Aeroporto più vicino: NICE CÔTE D'AZUR - 15 min. by car 29 min. by direct tram.

Nice is a fairly large city -- population c. 350 000 -- with miles of beach (pebbles, bring beach shoes!), an old town, more Italian than French, for the County of Nice was until 1860 part of the Italian Kingdom of Savoy, great hotels, a port (with ferries running to Corsica and Sardinia), lovely architecture, especially Art Deco from the 1920s and '30s, a university, street markets and tourists from all over the world, even... https://www.20minutes.fr/arts-stars/people/2268267-20180509-nice-prince-charles-camilla-paient-bain-foule-goutent-socca -- smart shops very near our apartment, pedestrian streets, great museums including the Matisse and Chagall museums, and any number of good restaurants and cafés.

Now, there's not only the Promenade des Anglais, completely renewed, especially for safety, but also the Promenade du Paillon, a lovely park where the river Paillon once ran, separating the old town from the new. Fountains -- the kids go crazy there -- play areas and exotic vegetation. Near the airport, the Parc Phénix, with huge tropical glasshouses, adjoining the East Asian museum designed by architect Kenzo Tange.

Excellent micro-climate, mild winters, less overheated in summer than most of the coast between here and Spain.

The high Alps are close behind, less than an hour's drive away and the whole of the Alpes-Maritimes department once you get away from the coast consists of sparsely inhabited mountain country. The Italian border is 35 minutes by car, not much more by train, and Provence is within easy reach.

Circa la nostra famiglia

I and Tanya are retired people now living in Nice. I'm British (i.e. mainly Scottish and Irish ancestry, but a good European mixture...) and worked for the European Union in Brussels as a translator, Tanya is a retired librarian. My son (by my first marriage) is half Italian and lives in Italy. My stepson is a concert pianist, living in Bulgaria with his Bulgarian wife and 7 year old son. My stepdaughter lives in Ridgeland MS (USA) with her theoretical physicist husband and their two daughters aged 19 and 14.

Only after coming to live in Nice did I learn that I had ancestors buried near here...

Stile di vita

I didn't mention this in our general presentation, but Nice is a very international city and we have many friends here, old and new, French, British, Irish, Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish, American, Peruvian... Many of us meet up for coffee or other activities regularly and you could share in that. Or maybe there'll be friends who can help you find your way around.

I'm doing a very long-term translation on my computer for a friend, but I'd hardly know where to begin when it comes to listing interests: the family, the arts, music, travel, mountains, good food, meditation, an unhealthy interest in an increasingly unhealthy subject, politics, a healthy interest in a relatively unusual one, seiki, which I learned from my friend shiatsu master Akinobu Kishi, Sensei and his widow, Kyoko.
