Calm and picturesque neighborhood….. a perfect start for discovering

Fafe, gelegen op de plek van een oude nederzetting, waarvan de artefacten en enkele primitieve beelden zijn overgebracht naar het Martins Sarmento Museum in Guimarães, heette duizend jaar geleden oorspronkelijk Monte Longo.

Tegenwoordig is het een provinciestad in het hart van de weelderige groene Minho provincie, een ideale uitvalsbasis om de vele UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocaties en de historische steden Guimarães, Braga, Amarante en vele andere prachtige dorpen, steden en plaatsen te verkennen.

En ook de beroemde Vinho Verde route met zijn prachtige wijngaarden in een van de meest oorspronkelijke en karakteristieke regio's van Portugal, gekenmerkt door de sterke Atlantische invloed, in een groen landschap met koele temperaturen en overvloedige regenval.

Vinho Verde is de grootste appellatie (DOC) in Portugal, met een oppervlakte van ca. 24.000 hectare, verspreid over een immens gebied in het noordwesten van Portugal, met duizenden kleine percelen, soms nauwelijks groter dan kleine achtertuinen. De Vinho Verde regio wordt in het noorden begrensd door de rivier de Minho, die zich uitstrekt langs de Atlantische kust tot aan de stad Porto, en in het zuiden tot aan de oevers van de rivier de Vouga.
De wijngaarden zijn geconcentreerd in de valleien van de belangrijkste rivieren.

Voorbij Fafe ligt een prachtig landschap, bezaaid met enorme, eeuwenoude rotsblokken. Bezoekers van Arões, op 4 km van Fafe, kunnen de indrukwekkende 13e-eeuwse kerk van São Romão bewonderen.
Vanuit de Calvário tuinen in het centrum van Fafe heeft u een panoramisch uitzicht in alle richtingen.
Fafe, dat pas in de 19e eeuw een administratief centrum werd, is sterk beïnvloed door de vele inwoners die in de 18e en 19e eeuw naar Brazilië emigreerden. Bij hun terugkeer naar hun geboorteland bouwden ze paleisachtige residenties in een imposante architectuurstijl die lokaal bekendstaat als "uit Brazilië", en eenmaal terug, leverden ze tegelijkertijd een belangrijke bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling van de regio door te investeren in de textielindustrie en in commerciële activiteiten, van die tijd.

Located on the site of an ancient settlement, from which the artefacts and some primitive statuary have been moved to the Martins Sarmento Museum in Guimarães, Fafe was originally called Monte Longo a thousand years ago.

Today it is a provincial town in the heart of the lush-green Minho region, a convenient base from which to explore the many Unesco sites and the historical cities of Guimarães, Braga, Amarante and many other beautiful villages, towns and places.
As well as the famous Vinho Verde route and it’s beautiful vineyards in one of the most original and distinctive regions of Portugal, marked by its extreme Atlantic influence, in a green and humid landscape, with cool temperatures and abundant rainfall.
Vinho Verde is the largest denomination in Portugal, with an area of around 24.000 hectares, occupying an immense area throughout the north-west of Portugal, with ownership spread over thousands of small plots, sometimes little larger than small backyards. Vinho Verde region is bounded to the north by the Minho river, stretching along the Atlantic coast as far as the city of Porto and to the south as far as the banks of the Vouga river.
The vineyards are concentrated along the valleys of the main rivers.

Beyond Fafe lies some magnificent countryside, dotted with huge ancient boulders. Visitors to Arões, 4km from Fafe, can see the impressive 13th century church of São Romão.
A panoramic view is obtained in all directions from the Calvário Gardens in the centre of Fafe.
Having only recently become an administrative centre (in the nineteenth century), Fafe is heavily marked by the influences brought back by many of its inhabitants who emigrated to Brazil in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. On returning to their native land, they built themselves palatial residences in an imposing architectural style that is referred to locally as "from the Brazilian", whilst also making a major contribution to the region´s development by investing in the textile industry and commercial activities in those days.
