We are currently in the process of returning to Ireland. We are interested in exchanging our home with someone there, so we have a place to land from which we can search for our long-term housing.

Rustic Luxury in a 500-year old traditional Canarian casita on the green north coast of Tenerife

Our house is a 500-year old home that used to belong to either the parish priest or the bellringers for the local church. It is all one floor with ancient stone dividers between rooms. There are multiple priceless historic items from the area in the dining room, including artifacts and photographs, making it a veritable museum; we have had a museum curator come and view the pieces.

The front rooms and the bedroom have vaulted ceilings, and there is original tea wood flooring in some of the rooms. This is an extremely traditional Canarian home on the historic properties register, with hundreds of years of history.

The backyard is an enclosed tropical paradise with a large temporary swimming pool with heater and filter. There are also pool toys, loungers, etc. There is a dining table with a pergola to enjoy a meal al fresco, and a seating area perfect for having tea or coffee in the fresh tropical morning! There are also two enormous Canary Island Palm Trees in the garden, along with multiple exotic fruit trees including figs, Mexican sapote, and pear. The garden is also incredibly private, with a wild jungle aspect that is both exotic and cosy, perfect for couples or families.

The enclosed tropical garden is perfect for dogs to run around!

We also have a large, currently unfurnished front patio in a very photogenic historical environment.

There is a full bar in the house's front room, including a wine fridge - filled with libations! Feel free to enjoy.

Rustic does not mean old-fashioned in our home!

Almost all appliances are brand-new.

We have the following modern amenities:

  • Digital hob
  • Ninja ice cream maker
  • Nespresso machine
  • toaster
  • American style coffee pot with grinder
  • Electric fireplace/heater in the main salon. The rooms are small and therefore easily heated and cooled.
  • Robot vacuum
  • Two dehumidifiers for the preservation of the museum items in the dining room
  • Wine fridge
  • Dustbuster
  • Chocolate fountain
  • Fondue set
  • Portable projector and speakers for watching films and listening to music, currently projected on the wall
  • two spritzing fans
  • washing machine

The garden has multiple solar-powered lights along the pathways and above the pergola, as well as some portable lights to move around as you see fit, for nights out in the garden under the stars.

The rooms were designed to represent different regions, with some handmade acacia wood furnishings and other unique pieces. Several examples of designer furniture are on display in our home.

We are both remote workers, one of us in the video game industry, so our house is very well equipped for remote work.

Tacoronte is on the green north coast of the island of Tenerife. Remember this means that there are four seasons, with rain and wet as well as cold during the winter months. However, in the summer, it is far cooler than the other parts of the island, which can be a relief! Note: by 'cold' this means that it can get down to 10 degrees C at night during the winter months; your personal view of what is 'cold' may be different! However, it's best to know in advance that the north coast has a great deal of climactic variation - there is even snow on the Teide in the winter! This diversity adds to the charm of the island.

The pueblo of Tacoronte is historical and very friendly. The house is very well located for buses going to La Laguna, Santa Cruz, and Puerto de la Cruz. It is walking distance from two parks and two large grocery stores.

The house is rustic, welcoming, and very comfortable, a wonderful breath of Canary history in a town with authentic Canary Islands charm.
What you will love about this neighborhood
The neighborhood is very peaceful and quiet. The night sky is filled with stars.

The stunning views from our pueblo are one of the most traditionally associated with Tenerife: the ocean, the cliffs, and the majestic Teide. The people of the town are very friendly, and love chatting with each other as well as newcomers, but the town is very Spanish so it is a great opportunity to practice your language skills! There are also multiple guachinches (inexpensive traditional local Canarian restaurants) in easy walking distance.

The entire area is completely walkable, for necessities, shopping, and local sightseeing. Tacoronte is also home to one of the ancient laurel forests of Tenerife, and various historic sites. There is a warm-water spa within a half-hour's bus ride from town at La Quinta, and all kinds of tourist attractions in nearby La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz.

There is a large agricultural market every weekend. If you cannot find what you're looking for in the local shops, there are buses that will take you directly to various cities around the island.

Dogs: this is a fantastic place to travel with dogs! They are welcome on public transport, on some beaches, and even at the mall! Parks usually have a dog run, and people meet up at the park with their dogs in the evenings.

We recommend the El Trompo/La Villa shopping centre and the massive AlCampo grocery store in La Orotava, easily accessible on the bus. There is a Leroy Merlin behind the centre, which is a B & Q/Home Depot/Woodie's type of establishment.

There is a bus stop very close to the house with a bus that will take you directly to the World Heritage city of La Laguna, or to the local beach area, considered one of the most beautiful on the island, and known mostly to locals. There is a HiperDino and a Mercadona within walking distance, as well as several shops of all kinds, and bus stops that will take you to Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, and links to public transport to go elsewhere on the island.
Additional information
Although the house is single-story, due to its age there are varied steps up and down between rooms and the flooring is irregular. The garden also has rough stone steps.

This is a 500-year old house, and as such, it is extremely rustic, it is quirky in its layout, but it has unique features and amenities. If you're interested in a truly one-of-a-kind stay in Tenerife, there are very few places available with this kind of history.

The house is technically a three-bedroom, but only one room has been dedicated for that purpose. The sofa is mechanical and extends out, so can be used for sleeping, but it is not a sofa-bed.

We have a back room that is separate from the house and currently used for storage of a couple things. However, this could also serve as a bedroom at a push. It's completely separate from the rest of the house across from the back door, so anyone staying in there would have to leave that room, go outside, and back inside to use the bathroom or kitchen. In the future we are hoping to do some renovations to add another bathroom and possibly also cover this area, but this is how things stand at the moment.

Dogs are welcome, but no cats please, due to severe allergies.

Although we are not currently set up with a crib or childrens' bed, children are absolutely welcome! So if you're interested in an exchange with kids, let us know and we can see what can be worked out, as there is definitely space enough but since it's just the two of us and our dogs, this is the current configuration.

The layout of the house means that the front three rooms can be closed off/opened , and in the past one of the front rooms functioned as a bedroom because both rooms have a front door to the street. Two of the available rooms can be converted back into a bedroom, and it's possible to use either side as the 'general' front door.

This area is very safe for kids, with a nearby primary and secondary school, as well as two large parks in easy walking distance.

There is a very large gym with swimming pool, sauna, spa jets, multiple machines, weight room, etc. accessible via bus and a 15-minute walk using the underpass.

Tacoronte is COLD in the winter! Our area isn't freezing, as some pueblos are during that time of the year, but it is definitely rainy and can be chilly, with alternating warm days. However, we keep our swimming pool open year-round, and it is heated, to give you an idea of the mild weather even during the winter months.

However, if you are looking for a sunny/hot experience and your trip is during the winter, look to the south of the island. The north of Tenerife is very green, which of course means it rains and is cloudy. It is also not as cold and miserable in the north as some like to make it out to be, but there is definitely a tradeoff. The tourist areas of the south does not have the beautiful natural foliage, so it depends on what you are looking for in a holiday.

The authentic charm of the north, plus the lower cost of just about everything, often makes it preferable to those interested in long-term stays. Yes, it can be cold and rainy, but there is a certain cosiness to working inside while the rain falls, and on the sunny days, the greenery and the flowers in the garden are a private paradise.

We can advise about places to go and things to do, including intercambios and other local events.

Note: during some parts of the year, there are romería festivals held here and they are VERY LOUD! Great parties, but definitely not for those seeking peace and quiet. Let us know your dates, and we can advise you about the festivities occurring at that time.

Although public transport is very good, renting a car is still the best way to see the island.
