Lovely apartment in Tavira ( Algarve-Faro District) Portugal
We welcome you to our apartment, a typical Portuguese home with everything you would need for a perfect holiday in the Algarve Portugal.
Tavira has a charming town square lined in cobble stone streets and tile lined houses. There are shops, cafe's, restaurants, grocery stores, churches, historic buildings, a Roman bridge, and castle ruins. Life in Tavira is slow and easy and is the less touristy area of the Algarve. The historic center is located along the River Gilao and a short ferry ride ( 3E) gets you to Ilha de Tavira, the island beach with pristine waters and endless white sand. We live along the Ria Formosa Natural park and estuary along a labyrinth of canals, islands, marshland and sandy beaches that extend 60 km along the Algarve coast between the beaches of Garrão and Manta Rota.
Our apartment is on the 1st floor ( with lift) of a 4 story building located in a quiet residential subdivision. You will find two comfortable bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. The two bathrooms each have a shower and tub. There is a nice balcony to eat meals al fresco or to enjoy your morning coffee. The living room is bright with the morning sun and has plenty of seating to relax after your day at the beach or exploring nearby towns. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, large fridge, clothes washer.
Along the coast there are many beautiful Blue Flag beaches and all very close by.
Some towns to discover close by are Santa Luzia, Olhao, Faro, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Alcoutim...
Further along the coast you can reach Lagos-1.5hr, Benegil Caves-1hr, Faro -35 minutes, Vilamoura-40 mins. In 30 minutes drive you reach Ayamonte, Spain, Seville Spain-2hr, Huelva, Spain-1hr.
Close to our home you will find some hiking paths which take you through the natural reserve and famous salt flats where they still harvest salt from the ocean in the traditional way and from our home to the historic center it is walkable with dedicated sidewalks and lighting. There are many trails www.viaalgarvian.org and golf courses nearby. North beyond the coastal towns you can drive through beautiful countryside, many olive and citrus orchards as well as vineyards and small mountains. Of course being by the ocean you enjoy a Mediterranean diet with plenty of fresh caught seafood and daily farmers markets. The ocean is warmer in the east as we are bordered by the Mediterranean Sea.
Tavira's origins date back to the Bronze Age, with significant Roman influence shaping its early development as a trading port.
The Moorish period (8th-13th century) brought advancements in agriculture, architecture, and culture.
The Christian Reconquista in 1242 brought new religious and political structures, and Tavira flourished during the Age of Discoveries.
The 1755 earthquake devastated Tavira but it was rebuilt in it's distinctive neoclassical style.
Tavira actively preserves its past and has an active fishing industry.

About the neighborhood
We are located in a quiet subdivision located in the northern part of Tavira. An easy 15-35 minute walk ( 3.2km) brings you to the historic center of Tavira. Much closer are some restaurants, a cafe, bakery and pizzeria within the subdivision and many shops and bakeries between our home and the historic center . Grocery stores are minutes away by car or a 15 minute walk. It is easy to get in and out to the main roads taking you to the many places you can explore. There are good connections to trains and buses taking you outside of the town but within town buses are sporadic. You can also use rideshares i.e. Bolt, Uber. A car is recommended.

We love the outdoors, exploring and spending time with friends and family.
We are Troy ( Accountant) and Sandra and our three young adult children living in Canada but we offer you our vacation home in Tavira, Portugal. We were Intervac members many years ago when the kids were younger, had a successful exchange with a family in France and all three kids had successful youth exchanges over the years. Now our kids are young adults finishing university studies and working so they rarely travel with us.
As an active family we are excited to continue exploring different parts of the world , meeting new people, learning about new cultures, trying new foods, and understanding the history of our environment as we make new friends along the way.
